Role of the Volunteer

The goal of all who are associated with the Ronald McDonald House of Tulsa is to make a family’s stay as easy and uncomplicated as possible. Although our residents are going through a very traumatic time in their lives, no counseling is offered by the staff or volunteers. These services, along with medical services, are provided to the family by area institutions and professionals. A good volunteer, like a good friend, is always an understanding listener and must always respect the confidentiality of what is overheard or told to them by our guests.

As a volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House, you will find that the majority of the work here calls for good old common sense and the willingness to give a little of yourself.

In order to make your experience as a volunteer a good one, as well as provide a supportive atmosphere within the House, our qualifications are:

  • Friendliness
  • Dependability
  • Flexibility (must be able to deal with a variety of people and situations.)
  • Must have a desire to help those in need
  • Must be a good listener
  • Must be able to follow instructions
  • Must have a willingness to share skills and interests
  • Must understand the need for respect of others
  • Must respect the need for confidentiality

If you can look at this list and say, “That’s me!” – come join us!! Share the spirit of the Ronald McDonald House of Tulsa.

In-House Volunteer Duties

The role of an In-House Volunteer is to help the staff with the daily operations of the House and provide hospitality and a caring atmosphere for our guests. As a volunteer, you will be asked to do various tasks and your responsibilities may vary from time to time. Keep in mind that the comfort of our guests depends a lot on YOU, the volunteer.

  • Answer Telephones
  • Assist with clerical duties
  • Help check-in and check-out families
  • Light housekeeping
  • Help give tours of the House
  • Assist with mailings
  • Miscellaneous duties as requested by Staff

These are the times our regular shifts Sunday through Saturday are scheduled. However, we can be flexible to your schedule!

  • 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Cooking Volunteer Duties

Work with House Staff to donate snacks and meals for our residents. All food for snacks and meals must be prepared at the House in our commercial kitchen, brought in from a commercial kitchen (like a restaurant), or prepackaged from a grocery store. The House cannot accept food brought in from your home or a non-commercial kitchen. We provide meals for our residents every day, including holidays. You or your group may do this on a regularly scheduled basis or only occasionally. A volunteer food handler’s permit from the Tulsa Health Department is required. Hospitality Cart

Our Hospitality Cart program provides amenities and comfort to parents, caregivers, patients, and siblings while they remain with their hospitalized child.

In 2 hour shifts, volunteers visit 3 floors at St. Francis Children’s Hospital. On each floor, the volunteers will offer complimentary snacks, toiletries, reading material, games, as well as toys and crafts for patients and their family.

For parents and other caregivers who are reluctant to leave their critically ill or injured child even for just a moment, the bright and cheerful cart is a welcome sight. And the friendly face of the volunteer behind the cart reminds families that RMHC Tulsa is there to provide comfort during a difficult time
